Elections are not just calm political matters that some people accept and other people politely disagree with, even if that’s the way that it seems to be in your area. Election protests can sometimes be silly, like the ones that I’ve seen, to the point where they aren’t protests so much as viral video opportunities. I literally saw a guy throw a shoe in the direction of a candidate during a political speech, which didn’t do much other than send security after him, even if it did get him his fifteen minutes. Many election protests are actively violent, and these are the sorts of protests that should help remind people of the importance of democracy as well as the difficulties involved.
I’m interested in documenting election protests all around the world. I’ll be focusing on the ones that are noteworthy in any way, although I may also include some of the more anecdotal ones. Lots of people protest elections for very good reasons, and their grievances are certainly worth noting for one reason or another. Far too many of these protests become lost to history, and people will lose track of the election protests that are actually successful, as well as the election protests that were unsuccessful. Hopefully, my research will shed a little bit of light on the subject for new generations.
